Register now to attend Nexus, taking place virtually on May 26-27, for an interactive walk-through of six diverse scenarios handled as they will be in the future. Scenarios to be covered include: Motor Vehicle CrashMultiple TornadosHazMatStructure FirePursuit - Multiple JurisdictionsCyber-Physical Attack.
 
Attendees will hear from a panel of public safety professionals and technologists. Following each panel they will engage in a 360 Experience to see how technologies fit into these scenarios with time for questions. The scenarios are designed to examine how a multimedia-capable, interoperable, feature-rich Next Generation 9-1-1 environment will transform emergency communications at all levels.
 

APCO is pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Public Safety Communications Awards and Technology Leadership Awards. The winners demonstrated the highest levels of professional conduct and outstanding performance in the line of duty. APCO will recognize this year's award recipients, along with last year’s winners, at APCO 2021, taking place August 15-18 in San Antonio, Texas.

 

The deadline to apply for APCO’s Certified Public-Safety Executive (CPE) Program is May 15. Graduates describe the CPE Program as “vital to up and coming and current ECC leadership.” Admittance to the CPE Program is highly competitive, and applicants must meet minimum eligibility requirements to be considered. Not all who apply will be accepted. Preference will be given to individuals who have at least a bachelor’s degree and significant experience in public safety communications or related occupations.

On April 8, APCO received final approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for two American National Standards (ANS). Public Safety Telecommunicator Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) Program is a revision of a current standard and Alarm Monitoring Company to Emergency Communications Center (ECC) Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) Automated Secure Alarm Protocol (ASAP) is a newly created standard.

Telecommunicator Devyn Johnson received a call from a woman whose boyfriend had collapsed on the bathroom floor. Johnson instructed the woman to administer CPR as paramedics raced to the home.

What is a traumatic event? For telecommunicators, traumatic events can be anything. While not every call we take is traumatic, the cumulative toll of the job itself is. The effects of cumulative acute stress can be detrimental to our mental and physiological health. 

Ask any telecommunicator and they will tell you it is our job to answer the call, help those who need it and make sure all our field units get home safely. No matter your center’s procedures, we all take this seriously and try to prepare for the worst, but sometimes the inevitable happens. When it does, what do you do?
