On May 10, AT&T announced the launch of location-based routing of wireless 9-1-1 calls nationwide. APCO has advocated for location-based routing, which allows carriers to route 9-1-1 calls to the appropriate emergency communications center (ECC) based on the location of the device making the call instead of the location of the cell tower transmitting the call. As APCO wrote in 2019, the time saved by delivering 9-1-1 calls to the right ECC without needing to first transfer a call between ECCs could save thousands of lives each year. In a statement, APCO commended AT&T for making this enhancement voluntarily and expressed hope that other carriers will follow suit.

From the Inside Pages

It is no secret that the long shifts required of public safety telecommunicators can cause challenges for relationships, activities and self-care outside of work. In my recent survey of California telecommunicators, participants shared that the heart of the issue was that frequently their scheduled time off was not honored, which worsened multiple areas of work-life balance. For some of the telecommunicators, being contacted at home regarding work issues was the norm at their agency.
