On June 6, APCO filed reply comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding proposed rules to require service providers to notify certain 988 stakeholders when an outage occurs that impacts 988 service. APCO suggested that 9-1-1 centers should be given the opportunity to opt in to receive notifications about outages impacting 988 service. With regard to the appropriate content and format of 988 outage notifications, APCO offered insights based on the experience with 9-1-1 outage notifications, including that the current thresholds for triggering an outage notification are too high and that visual representations of an outage would improve situational awareness.
