APCO is launching a grassroots advocacy campaign and needs your support.

TAKE ACTION

For several years, APCO has sought to correct the federal classification of 9-1-1 professionals by reclassifying them as Protective Service Occupations as opposed to Office and Administrative Support Occupations. Now, momentum is building in the House for a simple legislative fix with the reintroduction of the 9-1-1 SAVES Act (H.R. 6319). APCO is seeking the assistance of its members and others. We’re asking you to TAKE ACTION. Ask your U.S. Representatives to co-sponsor the 9-1-1 SAVES Act.

The online course Customer Service in Today’s Public Safety Communications delves into defining customer service, understanding customer attitudes and expectations, and the role of customer service in the context of public safety. The program also addresses the impact of customer service in emergency communications, discussing its application in communications center scenarios and emphasizing the interplay between customer service and quality control, including the investigation of complaints. Offered online 12/13 - 1/91/17 - 2/6 and 2/14 - 3/5.

Melissa Lawney, telecommunication engineer, resides in Spanish Springs, Nevada, on the outskirts of Pyramid Lake, with her husband and three sons. She serves as the Washoe County regional communications coordinator, overseeing the public safety radio system, which caters to more than 4,000 users representing 15 agencies within the Washoe County Regional Communication System (WCRCS). In addition to her local responsibilities, Melissa also serves as the secretary of the National Regional Planning Committee Board of Directors and presides as the chair for region 27 of the National Regional Planning Council.

In a bid to improve response times for emergency calls, the agency that fielded 700,000 calls so far in 2023 has hired 10 telecommunicators who will make about $45,000 a year.

The messages will update callers for reasons why police may not show up or be delayed in response to 9-1-1 calls, and they are expected to reduce follow up calls to emergency communications centers.
