On February 12, APCO President Becky Neugent met with Congressman Dale Strong (R-AL) in Birmingham, Alabama, to raise awareness of the issues facing the 9-1-1 community and how Congress can help address these challenges. Congressman Strong, who worked as a 9-1-1 dispatcher with the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Communications Center and currently serves as a volunteer firefighter and EMT with the Monrovia Volunteer Fire Department, is one of only two members of Congress with experience as a 9-1-1 professional. During the meeting, President Neugent discussed the need to address health and wellness challenges in the 9-1-1 community, the changing landscape of 9-1-1 with the emergence of new technologies, and the importance of properly recognizing the protective nature of the work 9-1-1 professionals perform by correctly classifying them as a “protective service” at the federal level.

It's that time of year again — APCO's contest for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (April 14-20) is now open! Sometimes all you know about a movie ahead of time are the names and plot summaries of the films and maybe the actors. You might not know what is to come until you go into the theater or punch the play button. Similarly, many people don’t know what really happens in an ECC. For this year’s NPSTW contest, we’re asking you to name the movie for your comm center and give us a plot summary, then let us know why you chose it. In place of trailers, send us a picture of your team. The deadline to submit is April 22.

Signal Boosters: Solving for Poor In-building Public Safety Wireless Coverage While Protecting Outdoor PS Networks
February 26 | 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. ET
Free for all | No CDEs offered

The problem of in-building wireless “dead zones” — areas where outdoor wireless signals are unable to penetrate inside buildings — has been a known and growing problem for decades. The proliferation of energy-efficient material that block or strongly attenuate radio signals, combined with the use of higher and higher frequencies, has made the problem worse in recent years. This webinar will discuss and explore the current state of signal booster use; applicable FCC rules and related fire codes; root causes of current challenges; best practices for standards, requirements, processes, and testing; and ideas and outlook for an improved future.
