APCO announced this week the launch of the Career Instructor Program (CIP), an innovative initiative designed to address the critical staffing shortages in emergency communication centers (ECCs) nationwide. APCO developed CIP to establish a structured training pathway for state or locally certified educators to attend APCO’s core course, Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) 1, 7th Edition, at no cost. The goal of CIP is to ensure that educators across the nation are well-equipped to deliver industry-standard training to the next generation of public safety telecommunicators, providing a solution to the critical staffing needs of ECCs across the country. The APCO Institute offers an online examination for emergency communications center (ECC) professionals seeking radio technician certification. This comprehensive exam covers essential knowledge for two-way radio technicians in ECC settings, including FCC regulations, fundamental electronics and specific challenges in public safety communications. The exam is designed specifically for working technicians and focuses on practical troubleshooting skills relevant to radio technicians. Live demos of APCO IntelliComm®, a criteria-based guidecard technology, are planned for APCO 2024 in Orlando on August 5-6. IntelliComm includes fire, law enforcement and emergency medical dispatch. Virtual demos are now being scheduled for June and July.

Hailey Brunner grew up around a sheriff’s office where her father has had a long-standing career. She started her career as a first responder in 2016 as a junior firefighter. It was then that Hailey first admired the calm voices on the other end of the radio, regardless of the situation. While Hailey was a senior in high school, her father encouraged her to apply as a public safety telecommunicator at the sheriff’s office, which ultimately started her career in 9-1-1. Hailey graduated high school in 2019 and started working as a communications officer at the Cass County (Mo.) Sheriff’s Office, in the county where she currently resides. Read more
