The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a long-anticipated Report and Order concerning the licensing and use of the 4.9 GHz band. Most importantly, the FCC ensured that the band will be reserved for public safety use and emphasized the importance of protecting existing incumbent operations and incentivizing technical innovation within the band. The FCC declined to move forward with prior proposals to permit secondary access via spectrum leases to non-public safety entities at this time. Join an APCO standards working group and help set the standards to shape the future of public safety communications. Each group includes 15 volunteers with training, operations or technical backgrounds who work collectively to write or revise a standard. A well-rounded working group includes telecommunicators, supervisors, managers, technologists and specialists from all sizes of ECCs, as well as commercial and industry participation to bring in outside expertise. All experience levels are welcome.
Volunteers are needed for these standards working groups now forming:
- Core Competencies, Operational Factors and Training for Next Generation Technology in the ECC
- Emergency Communications Common Disposition Codes for Data Exchange
