On March 2-3 more than 150 attendees gathered for the second 9-1-1 Wellness Summit in Portland, Oregon. While extremely important, these discussions can be difficult so APCO prepared accordingly in a number of ways. Coloring books and markers were provided to all attendees, quiet rooms outside the session room were available so attendees could take breaks as needed and therapy dogs were in attendance throughout the event.

General Communications Technician Level 1

This in-depth, hands-on program follows DHS, COMT and APCO/ANSI standards and is perfect for public safety and commercial radio communications technicians. Topics include troubleshooting, FCC/FAA regulations, safety and all core competencies required for today’s communications technician.

Line Antenna Sweep
May 1-2 | 16 CDEs
This comprehensive, hands-on course covers RF signal testing, antenna theory, and troubleshooting techniques. Designed for beginners and experienced technicians, it meets ETA, COMT and APCO/ANSI standards. Participants will work with state-of-the-art test equipment to address common field problems.

 

Improve emergency communications center morale with the course Bullying and Negativity in the Communications Center, 2nd Edition. Attendees will learn takeaway tips and solutions to promote workplace civility, address problem behaviors and improve employee morale. Emergency communication centers (ECCs) can help address staffing challenges by partnering with local schools to introduce students to rewarding careers in public safety communications. APCO’s Career Instructor Program (CIP) offers a free Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST) 1 course to train state or locally-certified educators to teach students the PST 1 course, providing them with a career pathway into the profession. APCO also offers the ECC Outreach Toolkit to help ECCs connect with area schools. Seats are now open for educators in the CIP Program.

Starting April 1, the APCO Illuminations CDE Program will offer new topics. The Illuminations general track addresses handling language barriers in the ECC. The EMD track covers refreshing medical term knowledge and the CTO track addresses Chapter 6 of the CTO Standard. Earn 12 CDEs with an annual subscription fee of $125 for APCO members and $145 for non-members.

Under the legislation, public safety telecommunicators would be classified as protective service workers and the FCC would report on the performance of 9-1-1 systems in the wake of disasters.
