Award Nominations Close Soon
APCO's annual Emergency Communications Center Awards and Technology Leadership Awards programs are accepting nominations. These APCO awards seek to honor public safety communications professionals who model exemplary professional conduct and performance, as well as honor ECCs that have utilized technological advancements to benefit their employees and the communities they serve. The submission deadline for all APCO awards nominations is April 1.

Come to the APCO headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, for APCO’s Agency Instructor course from March 31 to April 4. Designed for public safety professionals, this in-person training equips you with essential instructional techniques, adult learning principles and presentation skills to be certified to train emergency communications personnel in your agency. Learn more about the offered courses and register by March 23.

 

APCO is pleased to announce a special opportunity for incumbent public safety licensees operating in the 4.9 GHz band. As part of ongoing efforts to assist agencies in meeting new FCC licensing requirements, APCO will file PF (fixed point-to-point and point-to-multi-point) 4.9 GHz applications at no cost for eligible public safety licensees.

Demonstrations are now available to learn about APCO’s criteria-based Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Program. Designed to provide standardized pre-arrival instructions, the program was developed so that telecommunicators can quickly and effectively assess medical emergencies and dispatch the appropriate resources. A key feature of the program is customizable guidecards, which align with an agency’s specific protocols and local requirements. In addition, the program meets all NHTSA, ASTM and AHA national standards.

As a public safety telecommunicator in Buncombe County, North Carolina, for more than eight years, I have experienced many critical incidents. But nothing could have prepared me for the catastrophe that the city of Asheville experienced during Hurricane Helene.

On a Friday morning, we left our families behind and headed to work amid a raging storm. None of us had any idea what this storm had in store. As the rain intensified, calls flooded in. The wind downed power lines and trees, leading to blocked roads and damage to buildings, as mandatory evacuations were issued to different areas of our city. Calls that began as an escort escalated to swift-water rescues. Many of us took those calls and sometimes heard callers pleading for help just before the water or landslide took them away.
