The Rental Services Industry Foundation (RSIF) was founded as a separate 501(c)(3) Non Profit Corporation to assist students in the rental industry, members in need of disaster relief, and rental-related educational projects. RSIF provides scholarships for adult students of all ages and at many levels. Full- or part-time students in trade schools, community colleges or universities are eligible for these scholarships. Applicants must be CRA members, their children, their employees or the children of employees. Scholarships are awarded twice each year, for the fall and spring terms. All contributions to RSIF are made by members, vendors, memorials and remembrances. Funds are managed by Morgan Stanley and overseen by the RSIF Board of Directors. Consider RSIF in your charitable giving and estate planning. Donations can be made online or sent to RSIF at the CRA office. The future and current generation of rental industry employees and leaders will be grateful!
CRA will be celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in 2021. Your stories and photos show where we came from and are wanted for upcoming publications and events. We especially would like to see “Then and Now” photos of your store, equipment and rental families. Photos should be in a high resolution format suitable for printing. Contact the CRA office if you have any questions. Please send your photos and stories to Carol.Murphy@CalRental.org.
Loren G. Edelstein, VP, Northstar Meetings Group, states, "As a year of uncertainty comes to a close, we’re all anxious to get back to the business of meeting face-to-face. This special issue of Successful Meetings will better prepare you for our industry’s recovery, with a heads up on the latest trends, important tips for keeping attendees healthy, insights for engaging virtual attendees and much more."
Some of the articles included in this free issue are:
• 9 Trends to Watch. These industry developments will be even more prevalent next year. • Who’s Attending Your Digital Meeting? Are your participants A-Students or Out to Lunch? Get to know the seven most common attendee personas — and how to engage them online. • Winter Gifts. These products are sure to please clients, employees or yourself. • Stop the Spread. Take note of these quick tips to minimize health risks at your events. The California bill won a sizeable yes vote in the elections and its proponents want to take the campaign nationwide. With passage of California’s Proposition 22, the gig economy in that state, represented by companies like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and other app-based ride-hailing and delivery services, has secured the right to keep drivers classified as independent contractors. About 58 percent of the more than 11 million Californians who voted in favor of Prop 22 agreed that drivers should be able to maintain their independent status in spite of a labor-friendly Democrat-dominated Legislature that in 2019 passed a law limiting businesses from classifying certain workers as independent contractors.

“Any independent rental company now has the ability to compare themselves financially and operationally with their peers,” stated PEG founder Dan Crowley. Josh Nickell, PEG Board member, launched PeerTech in 2020 and signed exclusive contracts with Baromitr.com to automate Peer Groups Quarterly Scorecard. “You don’t have to be a Peer Group member to benefit from the Quarterly Scorecard; it's available to all rental companies,” clarified Josh. Crowley initially focused the reports on Sales Growth Rates, Employee Productivity, Cash and Debt. “We will be adding Dollar Utilization in the new year, but it has been amazing for our members to see how they are doing versus the general population of rental businesses and be able to filter based on ARA region, number of locations or sales volume.”
Business News
Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service has updated the form for Miscellaneous Income (Form 1099-MISC) and created a new form for Nonemployee Compensation (1099-NEC). The Section references are to the Internal Revenue Code unless otherwise noted.
Future Developments: For the latest information about developments related to Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC and their instructions, such as legislation enacted after they were published, go to IRS.gov/Form1099MISC or IRS.gov/Form1099NEC.
What’s New: Form 1099-NEC. The PATH Act, P.L. 114-113, Div. Q, sec. 201, accelerated the due date for filing Form 1099 that includes nonemployee compensation (NEC) from February 28 to January 31 and eliminated the automatic 30-day extension for forms that include NEC. Beginning with tax year 2020, use Form 1099-NEC to report nonemployee compensation. See part C in the 2020 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns, and Form 8809, for extensions of time to file. See part M in the 2020 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns for extensions of time to furnish recipient statements.
Redesigned Form 1099-MISC. Due to the creation of Form 1099-NEC, we have revised Form 1099-MISC and rearranged box numbers for reporting certain income.
