Meeting and Event News

An excellent time was had by all those in attendance at the CRA’s Greater LA and Orange County territories meeting, which was held at Alliance North America's Cypress location as part of a joint meeting with the American Rental Association of California.

Fine Mexican food was enjoyed by over 100 attendees as our members networked and socialized at the CRA’s first territory meeting of 2022. Cypress police officers provided an informative discussion on cxonsumer fraud, identity theft and burglary protection.

The California Young Rental Professional group was kept busy at their booth, which was kindly operated by volunteers Amanda Dickey and Ashley Fischer, and debuted their new trivia game (a work in progress). Seeing participation from all aspects of the rental industry coming together to network, share ideas and better one another is inspiring for the CYRP! We look forward to the next meeting.

A special thank you to our host ANA Inc. as well as our sponsors Makita and Mako!

As a result of COVID-19, the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) — the workers' comp rate-making organization used by two thirds of the states — has broadened its definition of catastrophes.

NCCI’s definition of a catastrophe, or “cat,” now includes any event — regardless of the specific peril — exceeding $50 million in aggregate workers' comp losses. To prepare for these events, the NCCI has also built a catastrophe risk factor, or “cat provision,” into their workers' comp rates. The following summary of how NCCI is preparing for future catastrophic losses is adapted from a presentation by Katherine Williamson, data science director for the NCCI.

Business News

National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) members are fighting against new taxes as well as against adding complicated regulations for data privacy. In Congress, NFIB and small-business owners are following and speaking out on two separate issues over the last few weeks. Not only have there been recent talks about a new small-business tax but there was also a recent bill addressing data-privacy regulations on small businesses. The current economic challenges are already hurting small businesses, and adding any new taxes or complicated regulations will only add to the challenges of Main Street.
The Center for Jobs and the Economy has released its initial analysis of the June Employment Report from the California Employment Development Department.

Recovery Progress — June's job and employment numbers remained positive but continued the slowing trend seen over the past five months. Nonfarm jobs (seasonally adjusted) came in at 1.1% below the pre-pandemic peak high in February 2020 compared to the U.S. at 0.5% below. California continues to lag overall in recovery and accounts for one-third of the remaining jobs deficit in the nation. Visit www.centerforjobs.org/ca for additional information and data about the California economy.

June results saw a continued easing in fuel prices, although California regulations and consequent isolation from world markets meant California prices remained more than $1.50 a gallon higher for gasoline and more than $1.20 a gallon higher for diesel. In the latest results from the California State Automobile Association, gasoline dropped to an average of $5.509 a gallon in California compared to $4.113 in the nation. Diesel was $6.371 in California compared to $5.193 in the nation.

While prices in California remain far above the average for the rest of the U.S., proponents for the state’s current approach to energy regulation often maintain that prices don’t matter, energy bills do matter, and energy costs overall should be lower in California due to its milder climate and continued expansion of public transit in yet another effort to reduce overall vehicle miles traveled. These justifications continue to be heard in the policy debates — even though the soaring rise in prices has meant California went from the ninth lowest average household electricity bill in 2010 (when the state’s current regulatory expansion began) to the 21st highest in the latest data from U.S. Energy Information Administration Agency. They are considerably higher in the lower-income interior regions of the state.
