On behalf of the California Rental Association, I am excited to welcome you to this year’s Rental Rally! As your newly elected President, it has been my honor to work closely with the CRA Board of Directors and Convention Committee over the past several months to not only plan and organize this event, but to ensure that it will be the best one ever. This year’s Rental Rally schedule has a lineup of amazing events that you sure won’t want to miss! We are pleased to offer four days of fun and education, and also plenty of opportunity for networking and collaboration among those within the rental industry. Here’s a glimpse of this year’s highlights:

Holiday Greetings from the CRA Board of Directors and Staff!

The CRA board and staff would like to wish members and friends a wonderful holiday season and a bright, prosperous New Year! The association looks forward to another year of providing services that contribute to your success in the rental industry.

CRA 2024 Holiday Territory Parties
Holiday parties were held in Berkeley, Bakersfield, Ventura, San Diego, La Mirada and Rancho Cucamonga. Participants enjoyed seeing old friends, drawings, a gift exchange, a Toys for Tots drive, and lots of fun and laughs. Thank you to all our vendors and rental centers that attended and participated. Announcements were short but included the excitement of the 2025 Rental Rally Jan. 12-15, 2025, at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The CRA board and staff wish all members a joyous holiday with family and a prosperous New Year.

CRSIF Scholarship Applications Due December 31, 2021

CRA members, their employees, and their college-age children are all eligible to apply for a CRSIF Scholarship. Every student can use a helping hand. Perhaps you are considering continuing your education or would like to attend a trade or certificate program that will enhance your job skills. One of the missions of CRSIF is to promote education in the rental industry for adult students of all ages and at many levels. Complete the CRSIF application and return to CRA by December 31.

Holiday Highlight on Mitch Gutierrez of Orbit Equipment Rentals

Keeping the tradition that his father, Mike Gutierrez, started in 1978, Mitch was presented with the Commander’s Award from the United States Marine Corps Reserve for his outstanding support of the South Los Angeles County Marine Toys for Tots program. Mitch has continued to help coordinate generous contributions that have enabled the Marine Corps to bring Christmas joy and send hope to America’s less fortunate children. Congratulations Mitch, what a true blessing you are!

Migraine Drugs Emerging as a Workers’ Compensation Cost Driver in California

Migraine medications made up less than 1% of all prescriptions for injured California workers in 2023 but accounted for 4.7% of drug payments, a steep increase from 0.6% in 2018, according to a California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) study. This growth is tied to the introduction of expensive, brand-name migraine treatments not listed in the state’s Medical Treatment Utilization Schedule (MTUS) Formulary. Migraines, often marked by severe headaches, nausea, and light sensitivity, are more common among women and typically diagnosed through patient symptoms rather than tests. In some cases, workplace factors like stress or injuries can trigger migraines, but lifestyle changes can also mitigate symptoms. Despite migraines not being a frequent work-related injury, the use of migraine drugs in workers’ compensation has surged, driven by newer, high-cost treatments.

Carb’s Updated Incentive Plan Focuses on Getting Small Businesses and Fleets into Zero-Emissions Technology

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently approved a $34.94 million incentives funding plan that will continue to support ongoing efforts to increase access to medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission trucks, buses and equipment. The nearly $35 million plan directs resources to prioritize small businesses.

The 2024-25 Funding Plan for Clean Transportation Incentives increases funding for small businesses that want to modernize their fleets with cleaner vehicles, including assistance for rentals, leases and truck loans. The funding plan allocates existing legislative funds toward incentive projects that support the state’s air quality and climate goals, including for marine vessels, emerging technologies and zero-emission off-road equipment, such as freight, construction and agricultural equipment.

The approved plan also maintains a commitment to address environmental inequities and provides a boost to businesses that need the most support, with at least 60% of funding focused on bolstering equitable outcomes.

But when stressful situations go unresolved, the body is kept in a constant state of activation, which increases the rate of wear and tear to biological systems. Ultimately, fatigue or damage results, and the ability of the body to repair and defend itself can become seriously compromised. As a result, the risk of injury or disease escalates. We all know that continuous exposure to stress damages health. NIOSH, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, reports that it also creates increased risk of injury at work.

CRA Welcomes Meridian Pacific Equipment to the 2025 Rental Rally Tradeshow

Since November 2023, Meridian Pacific Equipment has been an employee-owned, full-service dealership and multi-channel manufacturer's representative for construction equipment. The company began as a manufacturer's representative business over 30 years ago under the name Meridian Pacific Sales. The proceeds of the Ninth Annual Golf Tournament will go to CRA’s California Rental Services Industry Foundation (RSIF). CRSIF is a qualified 501(c)(3) foundation, providing scholarships to employees and owners of member rental centers and member vendors. It also has the purpose of providing emergency assistance in the case of disasters. The tournament will again be held at Eagle Glen Golf Course in Corona, California. Situated in the shadows of the Cleveland National Forest in Corona, Eagle Glen Golf Club is a spectacular championship golf course.

Presumption Laws Make Strong Showing Among New Comp Laws Passed

According to a report by the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), only 12% of proposed workers’ compensation bills gained passage this year. Tracking 911 state and federal bills that NCCI identified as potentially impactful, the organization noted that 108 bills were enacted across all jurisdictions in the past year. Of these, roughly half (52) addressed mental injuries in the workplace, focusing primarily on medical cost containment measures like introducing or amending fee schedules, treatment guidelines, and medical marijuana reimbursement. Another significant portion dealt with mental injuries and presumption laws, particularly those related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In a recent episode of The Workplace podcast, CalChamber Labor and Employment General Counsel Bianca Saad and CalChamber Associate General Counsel Matthew Roberts discuss two recent California Supreme Court decisions on California’s Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA), Stone v. Alameda Health System and Turrieta v. Lyft, Inc. Significant changes were made to PAGA this summer, starting with a reform package spearheaded by the CalChamber and signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in July, Roberts says. Two recent California Supreme Court decisions provide further relief for employers.

Peer Executive Groups (PEG) has named the winners of its 2024 Top Gun Awards. The Top Gun Award recognizes businesses who receive the PEG Award for Financial Excellence. The awards are given to the top 25 percent of rental operators based on financials verified by Peer Executive Groups. This is the sixth year that PEG has named companies for this prestigious award.

Peer Executive Groups Names 2024 Homeowner & Hybrid Top Gun Winners

Peer Executive Groups (PEG) has elected to recognize the best operators in their network that report their financials in the Hybrid/Dealer category. To qualify for this designation, Rental Sales amount to less than 70% of their total sales. Some of these members, in addition to Rental, submit performance results on Equipment Dealer Sales, Building and Material Sales, Hardware Sales, etc. These members have difficulty achieving the EBITDA as percentage of sales results of “pure rental” stores. This is a comfortable trade for most of these members as they have greater than usual sales and support more employees and overhead.
In 2023, Peer Executive Groups measured those Rental Operators focused on Homeowners as anyone who self-reported Homeowners as at least 35% of their total volume. The homeowner benchmark was comprised of over 30 peer group members. It is acknowledged by PEG that EBITDA achievement is more difficult due to increased employee costs servicing smaller and shorter contracts in general.

With the 4th of July right around the corner, many Americans will proudly fly the U.S. flag at their homes and places of work. As a sign of respect, clean and damage-free flags should always be used—dirty, ripped, wrinkled or frayed flags should never be used. Also, when flags are damaged, they should be destroyed in a dignified manner. If you're ready for a new flag, don't just throw the old one in the trash—that's considered disrespectful. Just as there's etiquette for displaying Old Glory, there's also etiquette for disposing of flags in a dignified manner. Before putting up your flag, make sure it is in good condition. If it isn't, and it's time to get a new one, here is information about disposing of your old flag in a respectful manner.

Many state and county government offices and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have flag disposal boxes outside of their buildings. Police stations also collect them. Once the disposal boxes are full, various organizations such as the American Legion, VFW, and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts collect the flags and hold flag retirement ceremonies. • Desks and Chairs: Ensure adjustability. Chairs should support the lower back and allow feet to rest flat on the floor. Desks should be at a height where forearms are parallel to the ground when typing.
• Monitors: Position monitors at eye level to avoid neck strain. The top of the screen should be at or just below eye level, about an arm’s length away.

Promote Proper Posture
• Encourage employees to sit with backs straight and shoulders relaxed. Feet should be flat on the floor, and knees should be at or slightly below hip level.
• Provide training on proper sitting and standing postures to avoid slouching and awkward positions.
