Industry Information

Global hydropower capacity growth remains stable — driven by China, India, the ASEAN region and Africa — although it is projected to be overtaken by solar and wind generation over the next several years, according to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Lower credit ratings have made it more difficult for utilities to borrow money while insurance and wildfire mitigation costs have increased, the report states. These costs have largely been passed on to consumers in the form of rate increases, according to Andrew Dressel, vice president of energy at Charles River Associates.

Amazon announced that it has signed three new agreements to support the development of nuclear energy projects — including enabling the construction of several new Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
The company is the latest to strike deals for nuclear energy to power the growing demands from its data centers.
Some U.S. utilities may need to increase their annual generation by more than a quarter over the next three years in order to meet rising electricity demand led by data centers and artificial intelligence, according to new analysis from Bain & Company.

AI is helping utilities determine weather patterns, permitting them to manage their electricity networks more effectively. Essentially, the technology employs machine learning to analyze historical weather data and satellite imagery to predict the approach of extreme weather or the likelihood of it occurring.

KKR, a global investment firm, and Energy Capital Partners (ECP), announced a $50 billion investment with the aim of accelerating the development of data centers and power generation and transmission infrastructure driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.
Each potential outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential and congressional elections has numerous implications for the fate of past and future energy legislation, particularly when it comes to the Inflation Reduction Act and permitting reform, say industry experts.
Nisus Corporation: Better Science for Better Poles.
Nisus Corp®
Nisus manufactures QNAP® Copper Naphthenate, the only heavy-duty pole protection without an EPA Danger label and with a proven track record, as seen in over 1000 years of cumulative field-test data. QNAP has cleaner handling characteristics, is not a sensitizer, and, because it is EPA-labelled for residential landscaping and boiler fuel at end of pole life, it has more end-of-life disposal options. Best of all, it’s made right here in the United States.

The project is part of Ørsted’s 20 billion dollar investment in building out American energy generation. Eleven Mile Solar Center is SRP’s largest co-located solar and BESS project, providing power to businesses, homes, and Meta’s data center in Mesa, AZ.
“High-efficiency modern natural gas plants will meet the electricity needs for our region’s growing economy. These plants also will bring good paying jobs and tax dollars to Kansas,” said David Campbell, Evergy Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Dispatchable natural gas is an important resource within Evergy’s growing and diverse energy portfolio, complementing our planned investment in wind and solar resources and supporting our commitment to affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity.”

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grid Deployment Office announced it has awarded Arizona Public Service Company (APS) two grants, totaling $70 million, for projects to strengthen smart grid resilience, expand wildfire prevention and mitigation measures and help meet customers’ growing energy needs.
Basin Electric was ranked among the nation’s top cooperatives by the National Cooperative Bank in its annual NCB Co-op 100® list, which names the nation’s top 100 revenue-earning cooperative businesses.  Tri-State’s members and rural communities across Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming will benefit from a reliable, affordable and responsible energy transition supported with $2.5 billion in low-cost financing and grants through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Empowering Rural America (New ERA) Program.
White Paper
As renewable energy sources such as wind and solar become more widespread, managing the power grid has become increasingly complex. Researchers at the University of Virginia have developed an innovative solution: an artificial intelligence model that can address the uncertainties of renewable energy generation and electric vehicle demand, making power grids more reliable and efficient.
Researchers have developed a new hydrogen production system that overcomes the current limitations of green hydrogen production. By using a water-splitting system with an aqueous electrolyte, this system is expected to block fire risks and enable stable hydrogen production.
The transition to renewable energy requires efficient methods for storing large amounts of electricity. Researchers have developed a new method that could extend the lifespan of aqueous zinc-ion batteries by several orders of magnitude. Instead of lasting just a few thousand cycles, they could now endure several hundred thousand charge and discharge cycles.
