Each year, the annual conference is a combined effort of the American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina (ACEC-SC), the South Carolina section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers (SCSPE). This year saw the Professional Engineers of North Carolina (PENC) join in the conference festivities. The keynote speakers of the conference were Mark Lorah, PE (Johnson, Laschober & Associates, P.C.), Thomas Robertson (Cranston Engineering Group), and Cheri DeFigh-Price (Parsons Corporation). At lunch Friday, all three speakers (who also serve as members of the Central Savannah River Branch of the South Carolina Section of ASCE) presented to the conference attendees about the Augusta Canal.
SCAPA exhibited in the conference's trade show and spoke to hundreds of engineers about the benefits of asphalt. The trade show also allows engineers to find out more about the association and the educational opportunities that are offered.
The asphalt industry's technical presence was certainly felt in the concurrent breakout sessions as well. SCAPA Technical Director Jayson Jordan spoke at the conference: he gave a presentation in the conference's transportation track. Jordan presented to a room full of engineers on Design, Construction, and Inspection of Asphalt Pavements. It was reiterated that the engineering community must begin design SC's asphalt pavements optimally and intentionally to prevent distresses. Jordan then explained various inspection items to look for during construction of pavements.
