SCDOT's Centennial: 100 Years of Service to South Carolina

On Friday, March 10, SCDOT held a brief ceremony to celebrate the agency's 100 years of service to the state of South Carolina. SCAPA and representatives from it's member companies were in attendance. 100 years ago, Gov. Richard Manning signed a bill into law forming the department. At the time, the SCDOT commission was comprised of a civil engineer, a newspaper editor and three ranking engineering professors from The Citadel, Clemson University, and the University of South Carolina. The first state highway system had 3,037 miles for the department to manage, in which only 26 miles were paved. The agency's initial budget was $111,000. SCAPA congratulates SCDOT on this milestone, and looks forward to our partnership in the years to come.
