Paving the Way
SCAPA News and Events

We are excited to gather together with our SCAPA Members once again! So on behalf of the SCAPA Board of Directors, all SCAPA Members are invited to join us for the 2021 SCAPA Summer Conference, June 25-27, 2021. This year's conference will take place in Asheville, NC, at the legendary Inn on Biltmore Estate, nestled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We hope you will join us, so sign up and reserve your room today as the early bird pricing and hotel room block deadline is tomorrow!

The hotel room block is open for the 2021 SCAPA Summer Conference, which will be held at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. There are two options for booking your room: The Inn on Biltmore Estate™ and Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate®.

SCAPA Summer Conferences are a special time for SCAPA Members to gather in a casual, fun environment and connect with each other. Members get to visit with long-time friends and also have the opportunity to build relationships with new members. Without our SCAPA Members that step up to Sponsor, we wouldn't be able to put on the top-notch event that Members have come to expect. That is why it is so important to recognize them and show our appreciation. We hope you, too, will take the time to reach out to our Sponsors and say thank you!

Those SCAPA Members who joined in on our Virtual Legislative Day were able to to connect with our state's leaders and discuss important topics that affect the asphalt paving industry in South Carolina. Sunnie Harmon and John DeWorken put together a very informative legislative program, featuring Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, the SC Ports Authority, and more.

Three years ago, Jacob Lopez was a high school freshman whose only goal was to spend time with friends, maybe learn a little something, and just get through high school. His counselor enrolled him in a career exploratory course at Golden Strip Career Center in Greenville, SC, where he learned he could take a Building Construction course to earn high school credits. His family has worked in construction for many years, and Jacob quickly became a top student in the program.

The SCAPA Board of Directors approved two new members this past month. Please join SCAPA as we welcome SEPI Engineering & Construction, Inc. and USI Insurance Services. We and our Members look forward to working with you.

For the third year in a row, Asphalt Pavement magazine is planning a story to highlight women in the asphalt industry. This year, they are featuring women in the field. Women of Asphalt is looking for high-resolution images of women working in the field, at the plant, or in the lab. If you have any photos you would be willing to share with us, we will forward to them on for consideration. We would love to see some of SCAPA's Members featured in the July/August issue this year!

Please send your photos to Yvette Critchfield at Admin@scasphalt.org.

This study was undertaken to objectively and comprehensively quantify and compare the performance and life-cycle cost benefits of SMA versus those of polymer-modified Superpave dense-graded mixtures used on similar trafficked highways. To accomplish the objective, market analysis was first conducted to determine the current usage of SMA through surveys of state highway agencies (SHAs), state asphalt pavement associations (SAPAs), and knowledgeable individuals in the asphalt pavement industry. Performance analysis was then conducted to compare the long-term field performance of pavement sections with SMA and polymer-modified Superpave dense-graded mixtures.

Description: This session will consider different approaches for constructing commercial pavements. Not all commercial paving projects are the same. We will provide some thoughts on equipment, the paving process, and specifying the correct mix for the projects.

  • Preplanning for success
  • Right equipment for the project
  • Specifying the correct mix for the project (Mix selection)

Description: A key to building a successful asphalt paving project is to utilize a quality bid package. Vague bid packages result in higher prices, job site conflicts, and the possibility of unmet owner’s expectations. This webinar enables attendees to produce bid packages that ensure best pricing and a project delivered on time, on budget, and as planned.
Attendee's key takeaways:

  1) Understand the importance of advertisement, award, and contract execution.
  2) How to develop key provisions to protect the owner and insure bidding by qualified contractors.
  3) Best practices to develop a detailed bid item list.
