The Mobile Training Unit (MTU) from SSPC was a big hit at the 2019 Mega Rust Show, held this past May in Norfolk, VA. The Navy’s Ship Force (SURFLANT) personnel (Corrosion Control Program Managers) all took turns performing hand and power tool cleaning demonstrations on ASTM D4228 panels that are equipped on the unit. DESCO Manufacturing provided the power tools needed for the demonstrations, as they specialize in equipment used for applications requiring dust-free coating removal. DESCO also manufactures a complete line of surface preparation equipment. Gary Duschl and Charlie Cherry gave a short surface preparation presentation onsite where they demonstrated the use of power tools on the MTU.
The Mobile Training Unit garnered a lot of traction with the younger generation in attendance. The Eugene Ashley High School, JROTC expressed particular interest in the unit’s equipment and capabilities. Industrial Blasting and Spraying skills are in high demand at every construction project in North America. The rise in blue-collar work opportunities, coupled with a decrease in emphasis placed on training for these types of jobs means that key industries are facing a major skills shortage. “The MTU brings the opportunity to advertise and attract attention to our industry, in the hopes of generating interest to those looking for new or better career opportunities,” stated Jennifer Merck, the Director of Training for SSPC. SSPC plans to use the MTU to introduce craftworker training to high schools, trade schools and Vo-tech programs as often as possible.
