at state-endorsed, online university

AUSTIN (August 20, 2014) — Today, WGU Texas announced the first five recipients of its "Go Further in Human Resources" Scholarships, created in partnership with Texas SHRM – Texas State Council (Society for Human Resource Management). The competitive scholarships are designed to help motivated Texas SHRM members throughout the state advance their education and careers. The following students will each receive a $2,000 scholarship to take their HR careers further with WGU Texas:

Brian Hayes, Master of Business Administration, President of Texas Bay Area SHRM

Mary Lanier-Evans, B.S. Business – Human Resource Management, member of Austin Human Resource Management Association

Carmen Leija, B.S. Business – Human Resource Management, member of Central Texas Human Resource Management Association

Michael Keene, B.S. Business – Human Resource Management, member of Houston Human Resource Management Association

Angie Norkett, B.S. Business—Human Resource Management, member of Fort Worth Human Resource Management Association

"We're very proud to recognize these dedicated and hardworking HR professionals," said Debi Dault, GPHR, State Director of Texas SHRM. "The high-quality education and training these students receive at WGU Texas, will not only ensure that our state has top-notch HR professionals, it will also make a big impact on the thousands of employees they serve by extension."

WGU Texas offers more than 50 accredited online degree programs in the fields of business, information technology, education, and healthcare, including nursing. The innovative, competency-based education model, which was recently recognized by the White House as an example of what works in postsecondary education, is ideal for working adults. WGU Texas measures learning, not seat time. Rather than spending time in classes with set times, students can move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn. As a result, many students are able to accelerate their time to degree completion – the average time to a bachelor's degree at WGU Texas is under three years. Tuition is charged at a flat rate of $ $2,890 per six-month term for most programs, and terms can begin on the first day of any month. Scholarships and federal financial aid are also available to qualified students.

WGU Texas will award 10 additional "Go Further in Human Resources" scholarships. This is a competitive program. Applicants need to apply to WGU Texas, be active Texas SHRM members, and provide an essay with their application as defined on the scholarship information page texas.wgu.edu/hrscholarship.

Degrees are granted under the accreditation of Western Governors University, which is regionally accredited through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Learn more at texas.wgu.edu or call 1-877-214-7011.
