Networks That Last

As a newbie to Austin, I was looking forward to meeting and knowing the movers and shakers of the HR community in Austin. A quick Google search on HR associations led me to AHRMA’s website, and without wasting any time I joined the club!

The organization is very open, professional and encourages new members to participate. I wanted to be part of the action, so I volunteered for the Membership Committee and the Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Being part of these committees has helped me be in touch with the latest trends in HR in Austin. It made it easier to build an understanding of the ecosystem that HR operates in.

Every city is unique, and the challenges that the business faces are a lot of times very unique to the city it operates in. The peer-to-peer network you get to build with a professional association like AHRMA provides immense learning opportunities. It also helps that as an HR community everyone is willing to share their experiences and knowledge. I personally experienced it whenever I approached anyone for any information or to have a chat. I remember getting inundated with all the information available around HR certifications. I sent an email asking to be connected to the right person, and I got all my queries and concerns answered patiently over a phone call.

It’s this level of personalization that results in a feeling of inclusiveness for all. But, it’s not all work at AHRMA, we sure know how to party as well! The fun side of AHRMA was on full display during the networking night at the AHRMA Gems Annual Conference 2015. After a day of talks and session, everyone was ready to let their hair down. The sponsor booths went the extra mile to outshine with creative displays and interactive fun games. The stars of the show undoubtedly were the casino tables. The excitement that came with winning fake money was contagious and provided lots of bonding opportunities. Set to the beat of an '80s soundtrack, the evening was a good way to build lasting networks and relationships within the HR community.
