I am often asked by HR professionals about the value of HR certifications. Will it help me get a job? Will it help me advance in my current organization? Is it worth the time and money? And I advise people that attaining certification, be it through SHRM, HRCI, WorldatWork or other respected bodies, is certainly a differentiator and adds a measure of instant credibility to your professional standing. So yes, it may help in getting a job (or at least an interview) if, for example, there are three viable candidates and you are the only one holding certification.

Yes, it may help you advance in your current organization, not only because it may still act as a differentiator but because of the knowledge you have gained in earning your certification. Is it worth the time and money? The more time you invest in your knowledge, professional experiences and activities, and business initiatives, the more you should grow and thrive.
 
With the SHRM commercials that have been running, I have heard first-hand the impact they have had in heightening recognition of the profession by those outside of HR. This has led to more interest in certification, and even a higher percentage of job postings requiring certification. But the bottom line, certification does not define who we are as Human Resources professionals. Making an impact in the bottom line and sharpening your overall business acumen is what will be recognized and lead to your success. Take a look today at the overall impact you are having in your organization.
