Student Chapters 101

Student SHRM chapters are as important to us as any of our other initiatives in our chapters. In the state of Texas, we have 18 student chapters. There is contact information for our College Relations representatives online at SHRM. Like our professional chapters, there are many references online that can be used in managing the chapter, such as recruiting materials, leadership succession planning, Chapter Resource Center, the Student Chapter Merit Award Planning Workbook and more. You do not have to do this alone. If you want to share any ideas that you have with others, please contact me, and I would be happy to get them listed on our website.

At the start of the new academic year, get with your Student SHRM Chapter leadership and the advisor to determine how the professional chapter can work together.

We can also help our student chapters recognize their advisors. The SHRM Foundation annually recognizes one student chapter advisor who is recognized for his/her outstanding service and leadership based on a variety of criteria, including contributions to the development of student leaders and the development of innovative initiatives conducted by the chapter. Student chapter leadership may not be aware of this award or may need assistance in writing the nomination. The new award deadline for the 2017 year has not yet been listed. (Last year’s deadline was March 22, 2016.) As College Relations Chairs, we can assist the students with this.
