The Military Women in Transition (Sunday, Feb. 16) was the first event of its kind. Our volunteers looked to help female veterans and spouses of soldiers boost their job search and/or enhance their existing career. The event featured inspiring speakers and provided individualized workshops, professional clothing giveaway with wardrobe and makeup tips, and the opportunity to meet with hiring employers. We had a great attendance, 300 volunteers and exhibits, plus news coverage! KUDOS!

Be sure to check out the following media coverage: KEYE-TV and statesman.com.

2013 Building Value with HR Excellence Award Winner
The Brazos Valley Society for Human Resource Management (BV-SHRM) recognized the 2013 Building Value with HR Excellence Award winner at their annual holiday luncheon and award ceremony in December at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center. The BV-SHRM Building Value with HR Excellence Award program recognizes and rewards an outstanding HR professional for accomplishments within his or her organization, advancing the HR profession, and providing service to the community as a HR practitioner. The award was designed to recognize and highlight HR professionals who contribute to their organizations' goals, help make a difference in their employees' lives, achieve professional development, impact the local community through volunteer service and advance the HR profession.

BV-SHRM presented the Building Value with HR Excellence Award to Philip Beard, who received a commemorative plaque and a $250 donation made on his behalf to the SHRM Foundation.

Philip currently serves as the Director of Human Resources for Lynntech in College Station. He has been with the organization in this capacity for more than two years. Philip was nominated by John Clanton, the company's CEO, who wrote that "our HR Director has a policy of ‘my door is always open.' He wants employees to feel they can stop by and discuss anything with him ... He also operates with the ‘how can I make this system or procedure better' for employees ... He always goes above and beyond to figure out a game plan to help all of our employees be as happy and as productive as possible."

In addition to his professional position, Philip has been a long-time member of BV-SHRM, holds the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certification, and takes every opportunity to mentor other HR professionals in their careers.

Other nominees included: Kari Griffin-French with the City of Bryan, Michelle Merritt with University Title Company, Christina Patterson with Otis Instruments, and Renee Weidemann with the Division of Research at Texas A&M University.

Additionally, you can find a link to the new HRCI Info Hub, which is a Help Center with step-by-step instructions about how to update your profile and a video about how to submit recertification activities.

MEMBERSHIP
It seems simple and obvious, but in any renewal notice, new member offer or event promotion, make sure that it’s obvious to recipients what you want them to do. Ask the other person to check that the call to action is clear and easily seen, with clear instructions about how to take the desired action. If it’s an e-mail, make sure that the call to action is mentioned at the top and the bottom to get added exposure.

WORKFORCE READINESS
The Sloan Award recognizes model employers of all types and sizes for their innovative and effective workplace flexibility practices. Sloan Award applications opened in January. You may access the application HERE. All applicants will receive a free personalized and confidential benchmarking report at the end of the award cycle. The benchmarking report allows you to assess how your organization’s workplace flexibility strategies compare with other organizations based on nationally representative data.

Encourage your members to apply for a Sloan Award in 2014! With your help and support, we hope to make working flexibly the new way of working.
