I recently had the privilege of touring Memorial Hermann TIRR (The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research). This facility, known for the recovery of Gabby Giffords from her gunshot wounds, helps bring victims of stroke, head injury, accident or other debilitating events "back to the life they love."
The purpose of my visit was to discuss the challenges faced by employers and employees in recovering to a level that allows a return to work. Employees and rehabilitation specialists have trouble understanding some of the limitations and liabilities employers face, and employers lack the knowledge and expertise sufficient to determine viable return to work options. As we pass the 25th anniversary of the ADA, I encourage greater practical dialog on both sides, leading to maximizing outcomes benefiting the employer and employee alike. Mike Kahn
Director, TX SHRM

The Dallas-Fort Worth Staffing Management Alliance (DFW SMA), a member services area of DallasHR, is partnering with the National Association of African Americans in Human Resources – Dallas Chapter (NAAAHR) and Mid-Cities Human Resource Management Association (MCHRMA), to host the Seventh Annual Diversity Strategies Conference on Sept. 10. The panel discussion will address what diversity looks like in 2015 on the heels of new regulation and demands for greater acceptance and integration of diversity in the workplace. The event will include a focused dialogue on a multitude of emerging issues, including LGBT and generational issues.
The panel is comprised of top leaders who champion diversity and inclusion by educating their employee population and encouraging their executives to:
- Explore how to take your leadership to the next level for better execution.
- Understand the value of a diverse organization.
- Define your current diversity model.
- Develop strategies that will cultivate inclusion.
Each will share real examples from their respective organizations on how they are doing just this! These best practices will arm participants with additional insight, increased perspective and additional tools to also help create strategies for cultivating inclusion.
