TTI/TxDOT RAS Research Seminar - April 13, 2011 - TxAPA Administration Building

In conjunction with research project 0-6614
Processing, testing and designing mixes with recycled asphalt shingles

Workshop Overview:

As pavement material costs escalate, engineers continue to seek alternate sources of binders from recycled products as a replacement for virgin asphalt. Recycled materials such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) have been widely used in asphalt mixtures as a replacement for virgin materials.

Currently, the maximum amount of processed RAS allowed in surface mixtures in Texas is 5 percent. Ongoing Research Project 0-6614, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, is evaluating the best use of RAS in asphalt mixtures, which requires a set of best practices for collecting, processing, storing and characterizing RAS.

It is also critical to have a balanced mix design approach which can evaluate critical engineering properties such as rut resistance, moisture susceptibility and more specifically, cracking resistance. Study 0-6614 is using both TxDOT's Hamburg Wheel tracking test, Overlay test, and other cracking tests to measure these critical performance properties.

Results to date show this combination of tests is ideal for selecting the proper PG grade and binder content to obtain optimum engineering properties.

This upcoming workshop will present the latest research and examine the best practices for collecting, processing, and storing RAS, and characterizing RAS binder. Test results from existing TxDOT projects will also be presented. Additionally, special guest speakers will present a national perspective on the latest development in RAS mixtures and environmental issues for processing and using RAS in asphalt mixtures.
