Up Front
TXAPA will host a Fish Fry Happy Hour and Open House on June 6, 2019, to celebrate the grand opening of our new TXAPA Campus. As many of you know, the Association purchased an adjacent building as the first step of our expansion. The total renovation of that building is complete and the Association has fully moved into its new offices. We also completely remodeled our original building, adding significant classroom and lab space to our training and certification facility, the HMAC. The goal of the expansion is to keep pace with the demand for training and education in our industry and to serve our members and industry partners to the highest possible standard.
Please join us for a tour of the facilities, fried fish and shrimp, cold beverages, and fun! RSVP at the link below or email kmofle@texasasphalt.org. If you have any questions about the event, please contact the Association at (512) 312-2099. We hope to see you there!
Designing the right pavement for the job is about to get easier thanks to PaveXpress, a free Web-based pavement design scoping tool for roadway and parking lot pavements. PaveXpress — www.pavexpressdesign.com — creates technically sound pavement structural designs for flexible and rigid pavements based on widely accepted industry standards from the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

The TXAPA 45TH Annual Meeting takes place September 17-20, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa in San Antonio, Texas. Last year we RAISED THE BAR and in 2019, we're taking it to a whole new level as we ACCELERATE TO EXCELLENCE!
When someone gets hurt on the job site, the number one comment is usually, “I was trying to get the job done quickly,” or “I always do it this way and have never gotten hurt before.” The thing that most people don’t think about is that when they either hurt themselves or others, they lose exponentially more time then it would’ve taken to get the job done correctly. If you get hurt, then how will you be able to provide for yourself or your family?
Pavement design must balance the need for the desired performance against the cost of building or rehabilitating a pavement. New pavement design requires a great deal of information such as geotechnical data regarding the supporting soil and existing drainage paths versus those which will exist after construction. Rehabilitation design also requires an engineering investigation before the recommendation of a solution which will result in long-lasting performance. Chapters 4 and 9 of the Texas Asphalt Pavement User Guide discuss how to conduct pavement engineering investigations for new design and rehabilitation, respectively.
A new generation of thin-lift asphalt overlays called Thinlays is a popular approach to pavement preservation because of their ability to provide improved ride quality, reduce pavement distresses, maintain surface geometrics, reduce noise levels, reduce life-cycle costs, and provide long-lasting service. This webinar provides comprehensive guidance for using Thinlays for pavement preservation, including how Thinlays fit within pavement management systems, when and how they should be used based on existing pavement distresses, how Thinlay mixes should be developed and specified, and construction best practices.

TSIT Engineering & Consulting is profoundly saddened at the passing of Terry L Smith, Sr., our founder and Chief Executive Officer. Terry passed away in Dallas, Texas on May 25, 2019.
Terry was an asphalt man at heart and proudly served the industry for over 40 years. Terry was known for his hard work, honest approach, and his can do attitude on every project he serviced. Terry never met a stranger and was always looking for a way to serve his community whether that was through his service on Sundays providing traffic support at church, providing additional lighting at the Trunk or Treat to ensure children’s safety, his Christmas toy drive providing toys and bikes to inner city youth in South Dallas or his last endeavor partnering with TXAPA in “Tomorrow Triumph Leadership” providing a pathway for young men and women to careers into the asphalt industry. While our industry and this world lost a great man, his son Terry Smith, Jr. (TJ), daughter Shatarah Smith and his team at TSIT are committed to honoring the dream he had for TSIT and to carry on his philanthropic vision.
In The Works
TXAPA is excited to announce that this year, we will host our first ever Winter Classic Golf Tournament at La Cantera Resort and Spa in San Antonio. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the TXAPA Scholarship Program. Directly after the tournament we’ll head straight into the Membership Meeting. Our goal is to expand the Membership Meeting, offering more education and content and making it a must-attend event for our members. No matter what the weather, we’re going to get together as an industry for a good cause and go out there and have fun!
