Winsome Wisdom - What I am Most Thankful For
Steve Chappell

Yeah, I know.... Sounds like the title of a paper of not less than 300 words for 8th grade English due on the Monday before Thanksgiving. But there are times when simple is better. Besides, coming up with some clever title to catch your attention would not change the message.

First, I am thankful I have lived long enough to retire. Don’t get me wrong, my careers in radio, music, and consulting have been a grand adventure. But not having a plane to catch, a car to rent, or a room to book instantly eliminates a major downside to my professional life. The downside to retirement, however, is the absence of those whose magnetic personalities contributed so generously to the upside.

Next, I am thankful for my parents who found me in an orphanage and immediately pointed me in the right direction. And though I may have strayed from time to time, it was never too far. I am grateful that my father insisted on my attending the Citadel. It was that experience that aided in my maturity and sound judgement.

Next, I am thankful that I was born, raised, and continue to thrive in the United States of America, during a span of time that began in Lynchburg, Virginia, and now rests atop beautiful Signal Mountain, Tennessee. It was a young couple who lived in Martinsville, VA who found me and took me in as their first child. How fortunate I am to have grown up in an environment where crime, corruption, disease, poverty, violence, and despair are the exception rather than the norm.

I am especially thankful for my gift of music. Nothing has brought me more pleasure and fulfillment over the years than creating, playing, and singing good songs. Seeing the enjoyment my gift brings to others is its own reward.

And finally, I am most thankful that over 2,000 years ago, a Man walked about with a chosen dozen followers and spoke of a kingdom beyond the Roman Empire and all others. I am thankful that, in spite of jealousy and ridicule, the Man stayed on message and stayed the course.  I am especially thankful that this Man endured a most horrendous death so that we who believe His story will one day join Him in the Father's Kingdom for eternity.

Have a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving!
