The power of community is vital to address the challenges keeping public power leaders up at night, and the American Public Power Association is working to help its members meet those challenges, said Sue Kelly, president and CEO of APPA, in her annual "state of the public power industry" address at the 2016 APPA National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

There’s a storm coming. It will be here any minute, and outages could be widespread. What do you do? Call up your vendors and try to get some extra construction materials delivered right away? Hold a meeting of your linemen and do some quick training on how to restore power? Figure out how you will manage outage information and dispatch crews?

With national politics so divided and disappointing, local governments are the best place for people to be heard. This goes for municipal electric utilities too.

We are often asked how we put on such a great meeting. It takes a lot of hard work by the committee and staff, of course, but it wouldn't happen without a very special group of our friends across the industry who unite with us to bring a top-quality meeting to Tennessee Municipal Electric Systems. Quite frankly, we couldn't bring in the speakers addressing topics important to each of you, have the many opportunities for special events, provide the outstanding food and drink and give you the opportunity to learn and network without their support. We encourage you to give these folks the opportunity to meet your system needs. Hopefully, you met each of them at the recent Annual Meeting and 50th Anniversary.

Next month we'll have a full look back on last week's annual meeting. Until then, check out the daily updates our friends at Naylor compiled during last week's 50th Anniversary Annual Meeting.

In conjunction with the National Emergency Response and Rescue Training Center, we are offering the following class to TMEPA Membership. This is a two-day (16-hour) class. The course fee is $50.00, and that includes refreshments, breaks and lunch both days. This class will be limited to 30 attendees, so register as soon as you can. Should we exceed the 30 registrations, we’ll further limit the class to one person per system. Click on the link below for a fill-able form file that includes registration, course description and local hotel information. Should you have any questions please give us a call. You may return the completed registration form to either Mike Vinson at mvinson@tmepa.org or Susan Sherrill at susans@tmepa.org. Have a great day.
