TMRA Teacher Workshops: July 2019

In July, TMRA conducted three teacher workshops, two lignite and one Uranium.

July 14-19, was at San Miguel Electric Coop’s mine and power plant. Twelve participants spent a week learning about surface mining and reclamation. They also learned how electricity is produced from lignite. They saw mining operations, how the land is restored after mining and did hands-on activities to help them better explain earth science concepts their students.

July 21-26, was at Luminant’s Kosse Mine. Fifteen teachers from around the state learned about the importance of using fossil fuels to provide energy for Texas. They saw lignite mining and land reclamation and visited Oak Grove power plant to see how electricity was produced. They learned about soil and soil types, how mining effects water, and what is involved in lignite mining.

July 21-26, was TMRA’s Uranium workshop. Eighteen teachers learned about uranium and ISR uranium mining in Texas. They toured EFR’s Alta Mesa’s plant and the South Texas Nuclear Project. They participated in classroom activities that demonstrated the properties of uranium and learned about how it is used to produce electricity.
