Nelda Gray: A Pioneer for Women in Mining
We wish to also acknowledge and pay respect to Ms. Nelda Joyce Gray who tragically passed away on July 7, 2020 as result of an automobile accident when a road structure failed during a severe storm in Freestone County. Nelda worked at Luminant's Big Brown Mine near Fairfield, Texas for decades before her retirement and her new career in custom home building. As one of the earliest examples of women working in the surface lignite mines of Texas, Nelda was a pioneer and positive role model for other women. During her years at the mine she was an equipment operator and also held various operations and maintenance technician and supervisory positions. Nelda Gray was 78 years old at her passing and was well loved and respected at the Big Brown Mine and in the Fairfield and Streetman communities. TMRA respectfully wishes to acknowledge Nelda’s legacy and example for the “Women in Mining” that followed.
