Throughout my education and career, I have been fortunate to have mentors. In college, I reached a point in my education that I did not know what to do next. There was a downturn in the petroleum market and there were none of the usual jobs available for geologists so, I sought out a mentor. Texas A&M had an organized mentoring program that went beyond just an academic advisor.
Any enterprise or operation, whether it is in resource extraction, manufacturing or providing services, needs a unified approach to support the achievement of its objectives (which can include health and safety, shareholder value, ethics, regulatory compliance). For this to happen, all personnel need to know and understand the organization’s objectives, and especially, how those objectives are to be achieved. A greater understanding will lead to an acceptance of those objectives and an active contribution to the achievement of them. There are several ways to keep personnel informed of the organization’s expectations and how they are to be met. One such method is through mentoring.

I teach because I love showing people things that they may not know. I love to see the look on someone’s face when they finally understand a concept that was previously unknown to them. I teach because I love to share my knowledge of life, the good, the bad and the ugly. What got me interested in teaching? One of my son’s 4th grade teachers. I did not like the way she taught. Kids do not learn from people they do not like. She once told me if I thought I could do better than her, become a teacher. So I did. I became a teacher because I love teaching.

Demand for rare-earth elements is growing on a global level. With that in mind, the U.S. Department of Energy is investing millions of dollars to create sustainable domestic sources of commercially critical elements from coal and coal waste products. The findings could change "waste" into profit.
Recent actions by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia blocked the EPA's WOTUS rule in 11 states, bringing the total number of states to 24. The judge ruled that the 2015 rule violated federal laws, including the Clean Water Act. President The Trump Administration praises the action and has called the 2015 WOTUS rule unlawful and over-reaching.
