According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s annual Mineral Commodity Summaries report, our nation still relies on foreign imports for most of the minerals needed for our national defense and economy. The 2019 report shows the U.S. is 100 percent import reliant for 18 minerals, 14 of which have been deemed "critical" by the Secretaries of Defense and the Interior. In total, the U.S. is more than 50 percent import reliant for 29 of the 35 minerals designated as "critical." Despite a domestic abundance of many of these minerals and metals, our reliance on foreign sources continues.
America needs a new political discourse on hard-rock mining. Several recent assessments have concluded that meeting America’s growing need for minerals will be impossible without rapid growth in mining. But a high percentage of minerals critical to U.S. manufacturing and the defense industry are imported, and that’s worrisome.

If you are concerned about global warming, you should join with our recent presidents in supporting part of the solution as close as our own backyard. Among all the debate surrounding climate change, common sense would suggest that support for nuclear power would be something almost all parties could embrace.
The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to support the replacement of the 2015 Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule with an improved rule. In addition to providing clarity for regulators and operators, NSSGA’s comments include member examples showing the unreasonable effects of poor regulations.

Like most businesses, mining organizations around the world are always looking for the next way to put themselves ahead of their competitors, improve safety standards, or reduce their costs and improve operations. Such thinking sometimes requires rethinking and redesign of the structure of the business and its operations. Today, many organizations are looking towards digital and mobility, in an attempt to improve their efficiency and reduce costs.
