A recently released federal report shows coal-fired electricity generation is estimated to increase this year for the first time since 2014. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s "Short-Term Energy Outlook" report, there is expected to be 22% more U.S. coal-fired generation in 2021 than in 2020 — largely as a result of increased natural gas prices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s a good thing for American energy consumers that John Kerry doesn’t set domestic energy policy. While he believes the U.S. won’t be using coal by 2030, coal is proving just how essential it remains to the nation’s energy security as well as the reliability and the affordability of our energy supply.
The recently passed $1 trillion infrastructure bill is estimated to be the largest investment in the nation’s roads and bridges since the creation of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which recently received final congressional approval and is expected to be signed by President Joe Biden in the coming days, is good news for the state’s coal industry, according to West Virginia Coal Association President Chris Hamilton.
