Over the past few years, Nevada has become a battleground between mining companies and environmentalists over the development of the state’s lithium deposits, the largest known in the United States. The proposed mines would produce millions of tons of lithium for batteries that will benefit the climate in the long term by deploying more electric vehicles (EVs).
Modern society depends on the responsible development of a wide variety of minerals and metals. Many of these commodities have been designated as "critical minerals" by the U.S. federal government because they are essential for U.S. economic and national security. Alaska’s resource and mineral abundance means we can play a major role in our country’s success by providing a secure source of these critical minerals.

As the Biden-Harris administration pushes for American-made clean energy, it is still missing an essential component: streamlining mine permitting. Without improving mine permitting processes, the programs that this administration wants to see flourish will not come to fruition.
ICYMI, last month our sister association, TACA, held a successful Annual Meeting, which featured speeches from experts on the future of Texas' construction materials industry, including the aggregates industry. "Texas is a very attractive place for population growth, and that means a strong demand for construction materials," says Rob Mineo, director at FMI Capital Advisors.
In the past several years, however, American scientists have succeeded in extracting critical minerals and materials from coal waste. If this effort proves efficient and effective, we may be able to simultaneously clean up polluted places and secure access to rare resources.
Years of neglecting its critical metal supplies is finally catching up with the United States, whose government now realizes it must invest heavily in mining and manufacturing, as demand for the raw materials needed to build a new green economy that rejects fossil fuels gears up. The problem is, this epiphany comes 20 years too late.
There is a growing conundrum for climate activists: meeting the Biden administration’s ambitious goals for cutting car emissions hinges on the quick approval of large, invasive projects environmentalists are predisposed to resist. Mining companies are trying to use the timelines for the energy transition to their advantage, promising wary conservation and tribal groups to shape projects around community concerns.
President Joe Biden is looking north for critical mineral supplies to meet government-inflated demand for clean-energy initiatives while the administration shuts down major mining projects on American soil.
The legislation offers a veritable smorgasbord for mining. Take electric vehicles: Consumers buying EVs can claim the entirety of a new tax credit only if the car or truck is made with minerals from the U.S. or from a nation with a U.S. free trade agreement. Mining companies that produce at least one of those minerals will get a 10 percent tax break.
