The 45th TMRA Annual Meeting was held at the Horseshoe Bay Resort in Marble Falls, Oct. 16-18. Attendees enjoyed an education dinner and auction, golf/fishing, putt-putt tournament – and speakers who discussed the upcoming Legislative session. With three receptions, two dinners, and one luncheon, as well as live and silent auctions, there was something for everyone! Time was spend with old and new friends alike.

Happy retirement, Ches! May your golf swing fly as straight as your margaritas are cold! Cheers to all your years at the helm of TMRA – you’ll be missed, but we know you won’t be far. Your leadership has been invaluable. With kindness as your calling card and humor at the ready, the TMRA team and all our members say thanks for your friendship and "thanks for the memories!"

The best way to learn is to do. At TMRA Teacher Workshops this summer, nearly 100 teachers saw for themselves how Texas’ natural resources are mined and used to make our everyday lives better. That brings to more than 1,500 classroom teachers – from fourth grade through university level – who have attended TMRA Teacher Workshops since it started in 1991. This translates to more than 1.5 million students who have heard the ‘real story’ of mining from teachers who have learned the facts firsthand.

Industry News

The U.S. Department of Labor announced Oct. 5 the award of $985,284 in grants for 10 organizations to support the development and delivery of education and training that will help identify, avoid and prevent unsafe working conditions in and around U.S. mines.

Arkansas company, Standard Lithium Ltd. , has installed a first-of-its-kind direct chloride-to-hydroxide Pilot Plant. The technology is housed in a self-contained unit and takes the lithium chloride feed produced by the Company’s existing Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) Demonstration Plant. It then converts this feed directly into a lithium hydroxide solution using a novel ion-exchange process.

The Critical Minerals Institute, has announced the inaugural Critical Minerals Summit (CMS 2022) on Wednesday, Nov. 9 in Toronto, Canada. An initiative to push for natural gas rather than coal to aid European allies has drawn fire from the West Virginia Coal Association. Chris Hamilton, president of the association, called the Partnership to Address Global Emissions (PAGE) plan, led by the natural gas industry, "irresponsible."

Safety

A surefire way to improve safety is to remove human workers from hazardous areas. Drilling rigs can instead be operated and supervised remotely, rather than on-site. Haulage can be done without human drivers, underground tasks can be done without a human presence, and the inspection of high walls or underwater regions can be done by drones, land rovers and underwater robots.
Reclamation

Arizona could have as many as 100,000 abandoned mines, many leaching toxic minerals into the state’s waterways, but state environmental officials said cleanup has been hampered by the fear of litigation. A newly proposed bill would let organizations step in and clean up long-abandoned mines without fear of the legal liability that could have attached to their now-absent owners.
Technology

Drones are becoming increasingly popular in the mining industry due to numerous advantages, including better productivity, safety, and reduced costs. They have a range of applications in the sector, all tied to their ability to enhance data collection for various mining tasks.
Legislative Update

As the youngest generations worry about the effects of climate change on their lives, some are turning to nuclear power as a "cleaner" source of energy — marking a significant shift from the previous generation of anti-nuclear environmentalists.

Washington's growing financial support for companies that produce metals used in electric vehicles will likely prove fruitless unless the federal government streamlines the mine permitting process.
