The Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act will establish minimum nurse-to-patient ratios for every hospital in the United States, study best practices for nurse staffing, and provide whistleblower protections to protect the right of nurses to advocate for the safety of their patients. United States Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, representing the 9th district of Illinois, reintroduced legislation (42 page House Bill) to improve patient care and empower nurses, as noted in a press release from March 2023.
