TONE News & Updates
Susie Cassle, MSN RN, NEA-BC, Vice President/CNO, Hendrick Medical Center"Growing our own" nurses is familiar to all nurse leaders. I am very pleased to share the following article written and updated recently by Susie Striegler, MSN, RN, Nurse Educator at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Our program developed originally in 2011 and continues to evolve based on needs of new graduate RNs and input from leaders. We are particularly proud of the one-year retention rate improvement noted. Having an opportunity recently to meet with the enthusiastic new nurses in different teams during their first NurseLink marathon day was energizing for me. Our experience continues to support the significance of the group process for new nurse hires as foundational.

One of the greatest challenges the health care industry faces today is the shortage of registered nurses. An aging population is causing an unprecedented number of nurses to retire from the profession. Also, the nursing schools are not able to keep up with the demand of students enrolling annually. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2022, there will be more than a million job openings for nurses in the United. States. This number will significantly affect the hospitals in the rural and urban areas, where there is a lack of availability of new nurses and smaller towns/hospitals lack the allure that metropolitan hospitals offer.
