Freedom Isn't Free

“The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government.” – President George Washington

The political dialogue, elections, and the legislative process are all important functions of our democratic society and require the engagement of ordinary citizens. Being politically active not only broadens your sense of community and establishes a meaning in your life, but can give you a greater sense of purpose and more social connections. Being politically active with TIA allows you to make a personal connection with your members of Congress while directly advocating on behalf of the 3PL industry and your business.

TIA is fortunate that several members have built relationships with their representatives and senators not only through TIA’s advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C., but also back home. Due to the tumultuous political times before us, a few of our true legislative champions have decided enough is enough and are retiring from Congress. These changes require TIA to cultivate new champions on Capitol Hill to advance its legislative priorities and goals. TIA needs your help in building these relationships with your members of Congress. Your voice makes the most difference because you live, employ and vote in their districts and states.

Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, being involved with TIA government affairs activities is key to advancing our goals. TIA has been working with Congress for the past several years to establish a National Hiring Standard for motor carriers to combat the negligent selection lawsuits plaguing the industry. Recently, TIA received an enormous victory by having five Democrat House members sign onto a bi-partisan letter to House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee leadership, stressing the need for this issue to be addressed through an infrastructure package. This marks the first time TIA received bipartisan support on this issue.

At the 2018 TIA Policy Forum, being held on June 5-6, 2018 in Washington, D.C., TIA will continue the momentum from this victory and push for the passage of an infrastructure package that includes a National Hiring Standard. Additionally, TIA members will stress the importance of keeping the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in place. TIA is aware that modernizing and amending the agreement might be a necessary step, but abolishing the agreement would drastically hurt the U.S. economy, trade and the transportation market.

As President Ronald Regan said, “Freedom is the right to question and change the established way of doing things.”
