Last week, Congressman Brian Babin (R-TX) introduced the "Responsible and Effective Standards for Truckers Act" or REST Act.This legislation would allow drivers to take one break per day (up to three hours) that does not count against their 14-hour on-duty time allotment.
On April 2, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a major decision relating to worker exemptions from overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). FLSA regulations have a major impact on TIA members, who are challenged to properly classify their employees as exempt or non-exempt, or face stiff financial penalties from the U.S. Department of Labor.
On April 2, 2018, the Federal Maritime Commission launched the first phase of its investigation into detention, demurrage, and free time practices at U.S. ports by requesting information on those practices from shipping lines and container terminal operators.
On March 21, 2018, U.S Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), along with seven other Republican members introduced H.R. 5358, the "Developing Responsible Individuals for a Vibrant Economy Act" of the "DRIVE-Safe Act." The legislation would create an apprenticeship program for commercial motor vehicle drivers under the age of 21.
