Industry News and Advocacy
TIA has released its 11th edition of the TIA Carrier Selection Framework (CSF). This year’s Carrier Selection Framework contains several key updates and additions: This week, the U.S. Senate is discussing amendments and policy items that will be considered as part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization. The House has already passed their version of the reauthorization, which included a National Hiring Standard for motor carriers. TIA needs you to act today to contact your Senators and support language championed by Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE). On July 16, 2018, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published notice in the Federal Register that it will not complete proposed enhancements to the Agency’s Safety Measurement System (SMS) website, and that it was withdrawing a preview version of those enhancements from public view. Armstrong & Associates is repeating a study done in 2013 on the Brand Recognition of third-party logistics providers, and they are requesting your participation. For your time, Armstrong & Associates will send you the final report covering the brand strengths and current bidding/RFP practices in third-party logistics. The report should be available in the next 2-3 months. A voluntary reporting system for tracking cargo theft in Canada has led to a database showing a steady rise in thefts, though the true extent of the problem isn’t clear. The Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Canadian Trucking Alliance teamed in 2014 to launch the National Cargo Theft Reporting Program, an online site where carriers and law enforcement can voluntarily report thefts. The misclassification of workers as independent contractors can be an extremely costly and a difficult misstep for employers to correct. In light of the new pass-through rates established under the 2017 tax law, businesses may be seeing an increase in individuals requesting to be classified as independent contractors rather than employees.
