If you have news you would like to share with other TIA members, send it to us, and we'll place it in the next issue of Logistics Weekly.
It’s been several days since Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas. And by now, we had hoped to be able to offer some reassuring news along the lines of “thankfully it didn’t turn out to be as bad as people were predicting” or “the worst is over.”
But unfortunately, that’s not the case. In fact, if you look at the various images, it’s overwhelming – because there are many aftereffects like flooding that we can’t do anything about.

Scott McDevitt started his career in the transportation industry 30 years ago working for Roadway Express before moving on to start his own fully managed 3PL more than 20 years agp. Seeing the challenges facing the industry regarding technology, McDevitt founded Propel Sofware Solutions, and is focused on building a TMS that utilizes his years of logistic industry knowledge. The Propel TMS is focused on bringing together disparate sets of abilities and tools and syncs them to offer the end-users with a seamless, comprehensive, and intuitive platform.
|
Scott resides in Pennsylvania with his wife Wendy and five children. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, hiking, and hunting with his kids and watching Philadelphia Eagles' games most Sundays. He also enjoys reading self-improvement books and is involved in a variety of world missions.
We asked Scott to tell us what’s on his mind.
“My initial thought is talking about the market shift from transactional to fully managed (enterprise), said McDevitt. "If you don’t change, you won’t be in business, because the carriers are coming after the transactional through various TMS providers like Kuebix.” he said. McDevitt founded and has managed Translogistics, Inc. for the past 24 years. Along with Tim Thomas (architect of Propel TMS), the two are available to explain how companies can use a TMS to secure larger enterprise prospects, create stickiness for their current customers and offer better value-added services.
On Monday, September 17, Maersk shipping line announced that it would be introducing a new Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) in advance of new global regulations that will force shipping lines to reduce air pollution. The Maersk surcharge will take effect on January 1, 2019, while the new global regulations do not take effect until January 1, 2020. In response to the charge, leaders of 3PL associations have spoken up about the difficulties this new charge will cause for their members and shippers.
On September 21, 2018, the Pipelines Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) published in the Federal Register a notice of administrative determination of preemption on hazardous materials transportation in California. The National Tank Truck Carriers filed for this issue to be addressed.
TIA’s Mentorship Program has been so successful that we’ve run out of mentors. We’re looking for experienced and successful brokers with some spare time each month, who are willing to pass on their knowledge to the next generation of brokers.
