Industry News and AdvocacyBy Noël Perry, TIA Chief Economist. It’s a matter of fact and a matter of perspective: Let’s deal with the facts first. Economists loosely define a recession as two consecutive quarters of GDP growth less than zero. For the six quarters beginning in 2008: One, we had five when GDP shrunk. That’s a recession! This year the first quarter grew at 3.2% and the latest guess about the second quarter is 1.7%. That latter number is a disappointment for sure, but it is not a negative. No economic recession here. DOL published an opinion letter clarifying that employers don't need to pay truck drivers for the time they spend sleeping. Although many drivers sleep in truck berths provided by their employer, DOL said the drivers need not be paid unless they're on call to work. The opinion was issued at the request of a family owned, long-haul trucking company. TIA members are at the forefront of digitization of the supply chain, and are constantly challenged to keep ahead of changing technologies to build effective relationships with their customers and carriers. The 3PL industry is made up of companies of all sizes, all of whom can relate to concerns about cybersecurity. Please help TIA understand how you are protecting your business from this threat, so that the Association can develop new tools and resources to help you and to help protect the industry.
