Industry News and AdvocacyOn July 23, TIA joined with more than 500 business and industry groups to urge Congress to pass the new USMCA trade deal between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. USMCA updates the more than 2-decade-old North American Free Trade Act, or NAFTA, to better reflect the trade realities of increasingly digitized economies. Today, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee passed their five-year $287 billion surface transportation bill. The bill would authorize $287 billion in highway spending, 90 percent of which – $259 billion – would be distributed to states by formula. It also would establish a program to fund projects that "will improve the resiliency of roads and bridges to natural disasters and extreme weather events" and authorize both formula-based and grant-based programs "to begin to reduce transportation-related emissions." Parts of the "One Federal Decision" policy to streamline project permitting would become law. Recently, the Heritage Foundation, an American conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., announced their opposition to an increase to the federal gas tax. The Heritage Foundation specifically notes that a federal gas tax increase, “In reality, the gas tax is not a user fee, it is a dishonest ploy to raise taxes on all Americans and allow the size and scope of the federal government to grow unchecked.” TIA members are at the forefront of digitization of the supply chain, and are constantly challenged to keep ahead of changing technologies to build effective relationships with their customers and carriers. The 3PL industry is made up of companies of all sizes, all of whom can relate to concerns about cybersecurity. Please help TIA understand how you are protecting your business from this threat, so that the Association can develop new tools and resources to help you and to help protect the industry. Even as the summer slump continues, July is still on pace to beat May volumes, with a national average van rate that's about 5 cents per mile higher than it was before the June peak. Overall volumes did slip last week, and 68 of the top 100 van lanes had lower rates. The week ended with strengthening trends, though, with California summer produce running at higher levels last week for both vans and reefers.
