Industry News and Advocacy
On Sept. 12, 2019, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published in the Federal Register a final rule that amends its hours-of-service (HOS) for CMV drivers to remove provisions requiring that a 34-hour restart include two periods between 1:00 AM – 5:00 AM and limiting use of a restart to once every 168 hours from the code of Federal Regulations. Congress has a little more than a year to pass a surface transportation reauthorization bill because the FAST Act or the “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act” expires on Sept. 30, 2020. You might be saying to yourself, there is no way Congress cannot meet that deadline… right? The 1959 classic film "Ben-Hur" directed by William Wyler which came in at a running time of 212 minutes was filmed in 8-months, so why can’t Congress put together a surface transportation bill in a little over a year? Because unlike the crew of "Ben-Hur," most of Congress lacks the passion and desire to pass this important piece of legislation that address our nation’s crumbling infrastructure and highway projects. TIA is seeking young professionals to join our Young Executives Committee. Historically, the Young Executives Committee exclusively held an annual lunch event at the April Conference, and no formal activities ensued until the next year. But with the increasing number of young professionals joining the 3PL industry, the moment is ripe to formalize the committee and provide our members with a platform for networking and information sharing with the next generation of leaders within TIA. TIA has partnered with the Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit, to address substance use disorders in the workplace. The partnership will allow you and your employees a confidential, app-based counseling service free of charge. We are passionate about beginning work on this initiative to help our members help employees in need.
