Industry News and Advocacy

Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA), the voice of third-party logistics, is welcoming a sold-out crowd for its second annual 3PL Technovations Conference today and tomorrow in Amelia Island, Florida. Thank you to all of our 2019 Technovators!

I have the pleasure to co-write this Chris on the Hill report with my colleague, Matt Mantione who is TIA’s Vice President of Membership. On Friday, November 1, Matt and I traveled to the Big Apple, New York City, to host the first-ever TIA Member Plug-in Event with our cohost Transfix. The event was a huge success where TIA Members and potential Members were able to network and make business connections with their local peers.

Load volumes have been rising since mid-October, but rates have not responded until now. For November so far, both van and reefer rates are 2¢ higher than their October averages.

TIA is looking to enhance our offerings for members who handle air and ocean freight. If your company does air and/or ocean freight, please take this survey to tell us more about your air and ocean freight business, so we may better serve you. By taking this survey, you will help TIA expand our member committees in these areas and develop more resources on these topics, so that we can add more value to the industry.

The survey will ask you how much of your revenue comes from airfreight and ocean freight forwarding; what other associations and publications you currently use to get information on air and ocean freight issues; what issues related to air and ocean freight you would like TIA to focus more on; and who your main points of contact for those kinds of freight are. Your answers will be kept confidential.

Click here to take the survey.

TIA has partnered with the Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit, to address substance use disorders in the workplace. The partnership will allow you and your employees a confidential, app-based counseling service free of charge. We are passionate about beginning work on this initiative to help our members help employees in need.

TIA is seeking young professionals to join our Young Executives Committee. Historically, the Young Executives Committee exclusively held an annual lunch event at the April Conference, and no formal activities ensued until the next year. But with the increasing number of young professionals joining the 3PL industry, the moment is ripe to formalize the committee and provide our members with a platform for networking and information sharing with the next generation of leaders within TIA.

Employees across the third-party logistics industry are planning for their retirement and thinking about the future they will leave for their children and grandchildren. This month, Congress is getting ready to pass legislation that would drastically change the game for people planning to leave their IRA to their inheritors.

A stretch IRA extends the tax-deferred status of an inherited IRA when it is passed to a non-spouse beneficiary, like a child or grandchild, allowing for continued tax-deferred growth over the inheritor’s lifetime. This provides them with a steady stream of income while also spreading out the tax they must pay on the IRA distributions.

The SECURE Act, which the House of Representatives passed in May and the Senate could vote on this month, would limit the stretch period for IRAs to 10 years for the vast majority of non-spousal beneficiaries, requiring the account to be fully distributed – and the inheritor to pay the full tax on those distributions – within that timeframe. This would deprive inheritors of potentially decades’ worth of investment income and would also greatly increase their tax burden.

Join us on November 18 for a webinar on the SECURE Act and how its provisions related to stretch IRAs could affect your ability to plan for your inheritors’ financial futures. The webinar will feature Paula Calimafde, an attorney with more than 35 years of experience advising families and businesses on estate planning and retirement planning.

Brokers Seeing Higher Margins Due To Technology Investment
InMotion Global, Inc.
It now appears the evidence is overwhelming. Brokers and 3PL’s leveraging new technology are raising their margins and lowering costs faster than those that don’t. In fact, 96% of brokers now say that technology like AscendTMS, TriumphPay, Smart Capacity, and Cargo Chief’s new human-like robot called Booking Assistant are helping to quickly eliminate labor costs and raise profit margins. Moreover, the right technology, when used properly, is clearly crowning the winners in the brokerage space.
