A new law in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2020 and will give citizens far more control over their personal data that companies in the state have collected. In addition, federal legislation, the Online Privacy Act, has been introduced that would similarly place new requirements and limits on companies that collect and store users’ personal data. To help 3PLs prepare for the new California law and learn more about what Congress may consider with the Online Privacy Act, TIA has published a new fact sheet describing what the laws do, who must comply, and what they could mean for 3PLs. Click here to view the fact sheet. TIA will continue to monitor these and other online privacy laws and keep members informed. If you have any questions, please contact TIA Advocacy at advocacy@tianet.org or 703.299.5700. Click here to view the November 2019 New Members Click here to view the November 2019 Candidates
Federal Maritime Commission Announces Administrative Changes for Ocean Transportation Intermediaries
Today the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) published a final rule amending some of its rules governing licensing, registration, financial responsibility requirements, and general duties for ocean transportation intermediaries. FMC says the changes are mainly administrative and procedural and are designed to “further reduce the regulatory burden on regulated entities.” The changes were first proposed for public comment in December 2018. Freight volumes have been building for weeks, but sufficient capacity has kept rates in check so far this fall. The national average van rate of $1.81 per mile is only 1¢ higher than October's average. On the other hand, the top 100 van lanes showed freight volumes increasing last week and more lanes had rising rates than falling rates. The top 100 lanes are often a predictor of where the national average is heading, so we may see increased strength as we approach Black Friday – which occurs later this year – and the upcoming holiday rush. TIA is looking to enhance our offerings for members who handle air and ocean freight. If your company does air and/or ocean freight, please take this survey to tell us more about your air and ocean freight business, so we may better serve you. By taking this survey, you will help TIA expand our member committees in these areas and develop more resources on these topics, so that we can add more value to the industry. The survey will ask you how much of your revenue comes from airfreight and ocean freight forwarding; what other associations and publications you currently use to get information on air and ocean freight issues; what issues related to air and ocean freight you would like TIA to focus more on; and who your main points of contact for those kinds of freight are. Your answers will be kept confidential. TIA has partnered with the Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit, to address substance use disorders in the workplace. The partnership will allow you and your employees a confidential, app-based counseling service free of charge. We are passionate about beginning work on this initiative to help our members help employees in need. TIA is seeking young professionals to join our Young Executives Committee. Historically, the Young Executives Committee exclusively held an annual lunch event at the April Conference, and no formal activities ensued until the next year. But with the increasing number of young professionals joining the 3PL industry, the moment is ripe to formalize the committee and provide our members with a platform for networking and information sharing with the next generation of leaders within TIA. #TIA2020Con Registration Is Open Today! Join your friends and colleagues for an in-depth look at today’s issues confronting the 3PL industry at the TIA 2020 Capital Ideas Conference & Exhibition, April 1-4, 2020 in Austin, Texas.

As the world of technology speeds up and the cost of operation rises around us, every 3PL needs to become more efficient by focusing their operations on key areas of impact. We believe the foundation of this increased efficiency is built on data, automation and networks, a critical part of every growing brokerage today. We invite you to join our web seminar for a discussion about the five foundations of data necessary for building a profitable operation. We will discuss the types of tools and networks needed to access this data, as well as the KPIs we’ve identified to help navigate a more clear roadmap to financial stability.
