The International Association of Fire Chiefs' (IAFC) Fire Department Exchange (FDX) Program is accepting applications until July 2 for the upcoming in-person exchange in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on Oct. 9-13. As part of IAFC Wildfire Programs, FDX provides in-person and online exchange platforms for fire departments facing wildland-urban interface (WUI) challenges. The core focus is to encourage exchanges among departments to broaden their knowledgebase, consider alternative measures, create new solutions, and improve overall practices and procedures within their wildfire programs. The Exchange covers key strategies such as mitigation, suppression, response, partnership, outreach, and education.

Aldine Fire & Rescue Fire Chief & CEO David Parker has successfully completed the process that awards the professional designation of “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO). The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) met on June 6, to confer David Parker becomes one of only 1,882 CFOs worldwide.

Participants are also eligible to apply for certification through State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association (SFFMA). This course does NOT offer Pro Board certification. Registration now open. Dates and Locations: Live Fire Instructor The NFPA 1041 Live Fire Instructor course is designed for firefighting personnel qualified to become live fire instructors and satisfies the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1041 Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications, Chapter Seven, “Live Fire Instructor.” It is designed around classroom lectures, group discussions, and group exercises to enhance skills needed to act as a live fire instructor and safely provide live fire training to emergency responders. Upon completion of this course, you are eligible to take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) written exam and skills testing. Registration will open on June 26. Dates and Locations: Fire Officer III The NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III course is designed to meet the needs of fire executive management and satisfies the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, Chapter Six, “Fire Officer III.” It is designed around classroom lectures and group interactive exercises to improve your abilities to manage a fire service organization, with an emphasis on community/government relations, as well as model planning, budgeting, human resources, trends and support organizations, and emergency service delivery. This course includes a written project that requires you to develop a strategic plan. Upon completion of this course you are eligible to take the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) written exam and project based testing. Participants that receive a Pro Board certification are eligible for certification through Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) reciprocity. Registration will open on July 3. Dates and Locations: Fire and Life Safety Educator I This course is designed for the individual who coordinates and delivers community fire and risk prevention programs that intend to eliminate or mitigate situations that endanger lives, property, and the environment. The Fire and Life Safety Educator I course is designed to satisfy the job performance requirements (JPRs) of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1035 Chapter Four and provide the tools necessary to obtain certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas (SFFMA). In this episode of Fire Law Roundup, hosts Brad and Curt discuss the settlement of two lawsuits filed by a firefighter who was severely burned during a rescue, a ruling in favor of the Milwaukee Fire Department in a suit brought by a terminated firefighter, an appellate ruling in Georgia that held an EMS unit was justified in relying on a cancellation by the police without the need for them to conduct an independent search for the victim, two West Virginia firefighters pleading nolo to theft-related charges, and a Third Circuit ruling that held a municipality did not violate the substantive due process rights of a volunteer fire company by eliminating it.

Lithium-Ion Batteries: Are You Ready?
Taking place each year during the third full week of June, Safety Stand Down highlights critical safety, health, and survival issues for fire and emergency services personnel. Departments are asked to suspend all non-emergency activities during the week to focus their attention on safety and health education efforts. The year's week of Safety Stand Down will take place June 18-24 and will cover topics relating to lithium-ion battery response and safety. These topics will be broken down into five daily focus areas: recognition of hazards, firefighting operations, firefighter safety, post-incident considerations, and public education.
