When we hear the term, we think of beautiful colors, a peaceful end to the day, and more. Did you know that the word also describes what a Texas state agency must go through every 12 years?
The Texas Sunset Commission website gives the following reason for this process:
“Is government giving us our money’s worth?” While this is a common question today, it was also on the minds of state legislators back in 1977. At that time, the Texas Legislature created the Sunset process to question the need for and success of agencies carrying out the responsibilities of state government.”
In 2018, the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners is undergoing their review. Sunset Commission staff are currently undergoing intense review, data gathering and input seeking from stakeholders. A link to leave comments is here.
As the trade association that represents the plumbing industry in this state, our role will consist of several tactics:
- Inform the stakeholders of the process and seek their input
- Open communication channels with Sunset staff
- Visits and communications with appointed Sunset Committee members (both House and Senate)
- A formal response to the findings of the Commission
- Presence and testimony at the actual presentation of the findings December 11-12.
- Working with Commission staff to amend, update or change any language to the recommendation prior to the start of the 2019 Legislative Session
PHCC is working diligently with our lobby team to respond to the influx of information along with making sure that the state Legislature understands the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners fully represents and serves this industry.
