We had a wonderful week at the Hilton Dallas/Granite park in Plano, TX. If you missed it, here are a few of the highlights.
The Scholarship Scramble was a huge success. Not only did it raise money for a great cause, but our golfers experienced their first-ever heckler hole.
Did you know that PHCC gives yearly scholarships to our contractor member's family to continue their education, either in higher education or apprentice school? Another great reason to be a PHCC member!
Our Golf winners included Longest Drive Men, Garrett Fruendt, and Longest Drive Women, Alicia Baron.
Brian Butcher won Closest to the Pin at 6'10".
The winning team came down to a scorecard playoff with Mitch Burkett, Izaiah Amadi, Brett Smelscer, and Garret Fruendt.
Our appreciation goes to LMH for sponsoring this great event, and all our hole sponsors who made this event possible.
Our Board met before the festivities began to conduct the 3rd quarter Board Meeting and to say goodbye to Lee McFarland who has retired from plumbing and PHCC. We are so grateful for his leadership and years of committed service.
Then we were off to the Conference, where we met many amazing sponsors and learned how they can help us grow.
We also had great educational sessions, including a presentation from TSBPE.
We are already working on next year. This is a valuable event for PHCC and it's members. It's important to remember that PHCC is a nonprofit, and our conference is one way for us to raise funds for the year, but it is also the time to build our community and connect with resources that grow your business!!

What an amazing event. We started with four apprentices representing hard work and dedication to their trade and companies. The competition was a nail-biter. We watched as plumbing fixtures went on, came off, and went back on, measurements were made twice, and in the end, we had our winners.
It is with great pride that I announce our top three competitors:
1st Place: Bret Burger, Armstrong Plumbing-Air-Electric
2nd Place: David Dominguez, Beyer Plumbing
3rd Place: Julian Fadul, TMW Plumbing
4th Place: Edward Gil, Beyer Plumbing
Our winner, Bret Burger, is now off to Nationals in Birmingham, AL, to compete against all other state winners.

It only takes a moment, but a slip, trip, or fall at your business could have devastating and long-lasting consequences. Keeping your employees and clients safe isn’t just common sense, it’s a solid risk management practice. Did you know:
Falls that stem from slipping and tripping are the second-most common cause of workplace injuries. 20-30% of workplace falls lead to injuries like deep bruising, broken bones, or concussions. 15% of all workplace deaths are the result of slips, trips, and falls.

Your online accounts and subscriptions — from banking to social media accounts — make up your digital estate. Although estate planning conversations typically focus on assets like cash, securities, or real estate, you shouldn’t forget to plan for your digital estate too. Without planning, these accounts, and the important information they may hold, can easily be lost.

Question: During the slower summer months, we allow our employees to work from home as a type of perk. To be eligible to work from home, an employee must have been employed at the company for at least one year. We have a new employee who has requested to work from home as an accommodation due to a disability. Do we have to allow her to work from home? She has been employed with us for less than one year and thus does not qualify under our policy.

Governor Greg Abbott announced several recent staff changes in his office including the official appointment of Robert Black as his new chief of staff. Black succeeds Gardner Pate who has served as the governor’s chief of staff since November 2022. Additional appointments include naming Tabatha Vasquez as the Senior Advisor for Budget and Policy, Robert Howden as Director of Legislative Affairs, Brady Franks as State Budget Director, and Michael Hull as Policy Director.
Governor Abbott returned from his economic development trip abroad to deal with the continued aftermath of Hurricane Beryl and power outages for many Texans in the Houston and southeast Texas areas. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick served as acting governor during Abbott’s absence from the state. Acting Governor Patrick led the efforts on Hurricane Beryl response and recovery that severely impacted portions of southeast Texas until Governor Abbott returned. The governor has demanded CenterPoint Energy provide plans to his office detailing how the company will prepare for the remainder of the hurricane season. The Public Utility Commission has also announced an investigation into CenterPoint Energy for purposes of reviewing its response to the storm and impact on customers.
Texas Monthly magazine published a scathing article describing a continuous history of sexual harassment of women in the Texas Senate. The Senate attempted to address reports of sexual harassment in 2017 by revamping and updating the body’s sexual harassment policy. Senators Borris Miles (D - Houston) and Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown) were identified in the article as current legislators who complaints have been alleged against in the past.
There is widespread speculation that the FBI and DOJ are continuing to investigate alleged criminal wrongdoing in Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office. A federal grand jury is believed to have convened to receive testimony related to General Paxton.
John Sharp, the longest serving chancellor in the history of the Texas A&M University System, announced his retirement plans effective at the end of June 2025. Prior to being appointed as chancellor by the TAMU Board of Regents, Sharp’s public service stints included serving in both chambers of the legislature, as a Railroad Commissioner, and as the State Comptroller.
Texas legend and one-time gubernatorial candidate, Kinky Friedman, passed away June 26. The singer, humorist, novelist, and songwriter ventured into Texas politics in 2006. He ran for governor that year as an Independent candidate in the race that saw Rick Perry reelected as Texas governor.

Home and business owners go to great lengths to minimize damage and ensure their plumbing systems are safe, efficient, and sustainable. When exploring options for installations, repairs, or upgrades, maintain peace of mind by hiring licensed. While there's no guarantee that everything will go exactly as planned, hiring a licensed professional will provide increased assurance of protection.
Members of PHCC Texas are licensed by the State of Texas, and the public can be confident that they will be employing someone with the necessary skills and commitment to high standards.
