Currently, there are no federal laws that require paid maternity leave in the United States. However, there are several laws that impact pregnant employees, new parents and their employers. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), eligible employees can take up to 12 workweeks of job-protected unpaid leave for the birth or adoption of a son or daughter or to bond with a newborn or newly placed adopted son or daughter. This bill will have a hearing on Monday, March 27th in the House Licensing & Administrative Procedures Committee. Stay tuned for the outcome of this important first step.
PHCC Texas has worked to improve the law that allowed the transfer of a license number due to death or retirement that was passed in 2015. Changes to this law will lower the number of years a license holder must hold the license from 50 to 35 years. The proposed law change, filed by Representative John Kuempel - Seguin, will open up this option to more licensees as they prepare to exit their businesses and enact succession plans.
