Safety violations can occur in any number of ways, but there are plenty of opportunities to help create safer work environments. One way is to become familiar with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Top 10 list, which accounts for the most frequently cited standards following inspections of businesses and work sites by federal OSHA. This helpful list can be used as a guide to learning what common risks to watch out for, and accessing vital information to help avoid devastating — and costly — worker injuries or fatalities. Each year, OSHA posts its Top 10 violations after the month of April to allow the prior fiscal year’s inspection data to finalize. Take a look at this list to determine if one or more of these safety risks may be present. What will you do for your business to avoid becoming a part of this statistic?

In its most simplistic form, estate planning is the process of outlining today how you want your assets to be managed and transferred after your death. In reality, it’s much more than that.
In your estate plan, you designate who should receive which assets and when they should get them. You choose who you want to make financial and medical decisions for you if you are unable to do so yourself, and who should care for your minor children when you’re gone. You can include provisions to help minimize estate taxes and other settlement expenses, and provide guidance to your family about your wishes for your funeral, burial, or end of life care. If you put this much thought into your personal affairs, wouldn’t you want to do the same with your business? One of the most important plans you can make is for the smooth transition of your business to the next generation.

As a second-generation plumber, PHCC-TX Board President Korey Boen started working in the family shop as a young child. After working in the field through high school and earning his Associate’s Degree in Business, he felt it was time to try something new. Korey left the trade for a few years to sell American Ironhorse Dealerships across the country, but returned only to reignite his love of the plumbing industry. “This is a great industry with many opportunities in a professional environment,” says Boen. “Few industries are as broad as the plumbing trade: you can be anything from a drain cleaner to a system designer. It's not easy and takes dedication and hard work, but at the end of the day possibilities are endless.” Korey most enjoys solving problems and believes every day presents a new set of challenges and solutions. He’s passionate about getting future generations involved, and encourages all P-H-C professionals to participate in chapter and state PHCC initiatives. “As a member, the professional friendships I've made have benefitted me beyond limitations,” says Boen. “Members have mentored me and opened their shops to teach me better ways to serve my customers and become a better business owner. The training and classes PHCC-TX offers continues to strengthen our workforce and develop the best plumbers in the industry.” Korey is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys hunting, fishing and sports with his family. Being a master plumber, obtaining a master medical gas endorsement and serving on the state board of PHCC-TX are some of his proudest professional accomplishments. Thank you, Korey, for your past, present and future dedication to the P-H-C industry.
